When we first meet somebody, we always do a psychological assessment. That means that we get a lot of information from the client about what they’re currently struggling with, why they wanted to see somebody. We also ask them about their background history, about any previous experiences of therapy that they’ve had. We understand a bit about how long they’ve had difficulties for, what the history is, what their current support network might be, what their current relationships are like, and what they expect to gain from therapy. On the basis of all the information that we collect, we develop what we call a psychological formulation of this person’s difficulties and how they’ve come to be sort of quite troubling for them at this moment in time, and we always match the therapeutic approach to this understanding of the particular individual client. Usually, by the end of one or two assessment sessions, we will put forward to a client what are the different possibilities in terms of what therapy they could receive and describe to them what would be the content of the sessions and what they can hope to achieve through the particular type of therapeutic approach. So some of the time, there might be a very clear therapeutic approach that we feel is the best fit, and sometimes we might give someone a choice depending on what they want to work on. For instance, do they want to work on very immediate symptom relief or do they want to work on understanding themselves better? Because the therapeutic approaches might be quite different depending on the goals of the client.
