Maria Amorim is a Clinical and Counselling Psychologist with over 15 years’ experience working in adult mental health, in a variety of clinical and research contexts, such as secure services, private practice, community services, or higher education institutions. She has worked in both Portugal and the United Kingdom.
Maria is experienced in working with clients from different cultural backgrounds, in the provision of evidence-based psychological therapies, tailored to each client’s needs, on a wide range of difficulties related to depression, anxiety, trauma, personality disorders, eating disorders, work-related stress and burnout, behaviour management difficulties, emotional dysregulation, and relationship problems. She has also expertise in post-traumatic stress disorder, and strong interest in topics related to neuropsychology.
Maria’s training comprises various therapeutic approaches, and she is experienced in delivering psychological interventions such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Schema Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing therapy. In addition to her clinical work, Maria also provides clinical supervision, training and takes part in research projects.
In 2018, Maria and her team at Arbury Court hospital (Warrington, Cheshire) proudly won an Award for Excellence in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy from the Association for Psychological Therapies.
Maria is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as practitioner psychologist. She is a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society (BPS), and a member of the Division of Clinical Psychology and the Psychotherapy section of the BPS.
Maria provides therapy both in English and in Portuguese.
